The 6th running of The O'Darby Stakes, seen as a forerunner to the Irish Derby, was held on Wednesday 12th June 1822 at The Curragh over 1 mile 3 furlongs and 58 yards. Eleven Subscribers paid 25 sovereigns each, with colts allocated 8st 7lbs and fillies allocated 8st 2lbs. The winner was owned by Lord Sligo.

On Monday 22nd April 1822 Starch beat Roller and Haidee in the Kildare Stakes. On Tuesday 23rd April 1822 Mr Prendergast's chestnut filly by Rainbow won the Lum Stakes beating Mr Gore's filly by Sir Walter. On Monday 29th April 1822 Starch beat Mr Prendergast's chestnut filly by Rainbow in the 200 Guineas Coote Stakes. On the same day of winning the O'Darby Stakes, Starch walked over to claim the Produce Sweepstake. On Friday 14th June 1822 Starch was beaten by the aged Roller in a Sweepstake, but did beat the other 4 in the field. On Thursday 12th September 1822 Starch won the 100 Guineas His Majesty's Plate, beating Zoe and Mr Prendergast's chestnut filly by Rainbow. On Friday 13th September 1822 Starch was second in the Wellington Stakes, beaten by the older Mokannah. On Monday 14th October 1822 Starch was second in the Kirwan Stakes behind The Trout. On Wednesday 16th October 1822 Starch won His Majesty's 100 Guineas Plate, beating Corinne and O Fy. On Saturday 19th October 1822 Starch won the Gold Cup beating 6 older horses, including his previous conqueror Mokannah.
